Here’s a guide to those we’ve met and expect to play a key role in the series. Of all the newly prominent houses in House of the Dragon, Hightower is one of the most important to keep your eye on. The house is headed up by Lord Hobert Hightower, whose younger brother Ser Otto was Hand to King Viserys I Targaryen for much of his reign.

The series begins with the reign of King Viserys I, the fifth Targaryen ruler, the question of his succession, and the events that unfold after he names his daughter, Rhaenyra, heir — a title a woman had never assumed. During this Targaryen Civil War, George R.R. Martin killed off half the population of Westeros and, as noted previously, nearly every member of the blondest family. However, the HBO series has already tweaked parts of the book, so there’s no reason to believe that everything will go down as Martin wrote in the lore.

Vermithor is one of the largest dragons to ever reside in Westeros with only Vhagar and Balerion besting him in size. Just like his brother’s dragon, Luke’s was hatched from an egg he was given at birth. This means that the dragon is quite small at this point, but will grow larger in time. Caraxes is one of the largest and most dangerous of all the remaining Targaryen dragons, thanks in part to the fact that it’s seen war most recently. Caraxes has red scales and was ridden by Daemon Targaryen during the Prince’s many battles around the world, most notably in the Stepstones. Dreamfyre is a pale-blue dragon, older but more slender than most of the others.

Five days after its premiere, the series was renewed for a second season. Sapochnik departed as showrunner after the first season, leaving Condal to serve as the sole showrunner for the second season. The second season is set to premiere on June 16, 2024, consisting of 8 episodes.

To help you keep track of the various houses — and how they fit into the inevitable Targaryen civil war — we’ll be updating this house and character guide throughout the season. When House of the Dragon begins, Viserys I Targaryen is King of Westeros after a Great Council had voted for him to succeed his grandfather Jaehaerys. Following the death of his wife Aemma Arryn and their newborn son, Baelon, Viserys Targaryen named his daughter Rhaenyra as his heir, displacing his brother, Daemon Targaryen, from the line of succession.
Episode 10: How ‘House of the Dragon’ fumbled its Season 1 finale to set up Season 2
Raised by her grandmother Rhaenys Targaryen in Driftmark after her mother’s death. His brother Aegon and nephews Jacaerys and Lucerys Velaryon teased him about not having a dragon when they were younger. The current ruler of the Seven Kingdoms and the fifth Targaryen king to sit on the Iron Throne. Viserys was chosen by the Great Council to succeed his grandfather, King Jaehaerys Targaryen, over his elder cousin, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, because he was the king’s oldest male descendant. Otto gathers the great houses of Westeros to affirm their allegiance.

So, we’ll see the “Dance of the Dragons,” so nicknamed by the civilians of Westeros, take place with mass casualties as a result. King Viserys Targaryen’s first child with his second wife, Lady Alicent Hightower. Some consider Aegon a preferable heir because he is King Viserys’ eldest male descendant.

Despite the quick renewal, the follow-up installment is set to be released a whole two years after its predecessors. If you watched Game of Thrones you of course remember the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen, and her quest to take back the Iron Throne. From that period, House of the Dragon brings us back nearly 200 years to the time in Westerosi history when House Targaryen was at the height of its power.

If you want to see how that part of Targaryen history unfolds, you’ll have to keep an eye on House of the Dragon. Game of Thrones is based on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, but House of the Dragon is based on his “history” book, Fire & Blood. The book is credited as written by an Archmaester of Westeros, with various accounts on what happened during the Targaryen reign.
The Velaryons are a Valyrian house, originating from Essos’ Valyrian Peninsula. Corlys is married to Viserys’ cousin, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, dubbed the Queen Who Never Was after she was passed over as Jaehaerys’ heir. Together, Corlys and Rhaenys have two children, Laena and Laenor. Though Laenor is not a member of House Targaryen, he is the rider of the Targaryen-bred dragon Seasmoke. Be sure to check back throughout the season as new information is revealed. With that said, this series has been plotted out for four seasons, and that plan could change, but it’s unlikely that we will see the entire war take place in Season 2.
She is at some point claimed by Helaena Targaryen, though it’s not really clear if this has happened yet as of episode 7. The younger son of Lord Lyonel Strong, who served as King Viserys’ Master of Laws before he is promoted to Hand of the King. Larys is a close and calculating confidant of Alicent Hightower — perhaps with an agenda of his own. Ser Harwin Strong is his older brother, but familial love appears to be a foreign concept to Larys. People have noticed he and his brothers Jacaerys and Joffrey did not inherit their parents’ Valyrian features and instead resemble a certain former Commander of the City Watch. The heir of his grandfather, Corlys Velaryon, he is expected to become the next Lord of Driftmark.
A bright-gold dragon with pink-membraned wings, Sunfyre is the dragon of Aegon Targaryen and a swift flier, though far from the biggest of the Targaryens’ remaining dragons. Get Screen Gab for everything about the TV shows and streaming movies everyone’s talking about. Considering what happened to Joffreys Lonmouth and Baratheon, should probably consider avoiding weddings. “House of the Dragon” will delight fans with a new, engrossing chapter in the saga — one that matches and at times improves on its predecessor. King Jaehaerys Targaryen’s grandchild who, as his oldest living descendant, had a claim to the Iron Throne. Since the Great Council passed her over, she has been known as “the Queen Who Never Was.” Princess Rhaenys is the cousin of King Viserys Targaryen, who inherited the crown instead.
Rhaenyra is likely the first rider of Syrax, a dragon she named after a Valyrian goddess when the princess claimed the dragon at 9 years old. Syrax was nearly as large and threatening as Caraxes, though Rhaenyra has not ridden her into a true battle. The Hand — or lead advisor — of King Viserys, loyal to both his king and the realm.
